NWS Forecaster Discussion

Area forecast discussion...corrected
National Weather Service Seattle Washington
330 PM PST Sat Jan 31 2015

Synopsis...an upper level ridge along the Washington coast late
this afternoon will shift east of the Cascades late tonight. A weak
frontal system will bring a little rain to the area on Sunday and
will be followed by another...slightly stronger system...on Monday.
Showers on Tuesday will gradually taper off Tuesday night into
Wednesday morning. A transition to a wet and mild pattern will start
on Thursday and will continue through next weekend.

&&

Short term...satellite imagery and observations show that fog that
was rather widespread across the interior of western Washington this
morning has lifted into a low stratus deck and has mixed out
completely over the north interior. The low stratus is thin in spots
as seen looking out the window...so it may scatter out by Sundown.
If it does...expect at least some patchy fog to reform over the
central sound area after Sundown. But the latest hrrr shows the
stratus only slowly decreasing this evening...then middle and high
clouds spreading in from the northwest will be too thick to allow for
sufficient radiational cooling for fog to reform.

The latest 18z nam12 and GFS model solutions show the rain shield
ahead of the incoming cold front reaching the coastline shortly
after 12z then moving into the interior by about 15z. The wrinkle
for later this evening is what appears to be a developing weak warm
front over the coastal waters that will likely reach the north coast
around 03z then spread into the north interior 10z-14z. This is
shown best by the hrrr. The nam12 limits precipitation chances late
to the north Cascades while the GFS is only slightly more generous
showing some light precipitation in the Olympics. The hrrr and 12z
European model (ecmwf) solutions are more generous showing precipitation spreading
onto the coast and northern Olympics this evening then from about
Everett northward in the interior and from Snoqualmie Pass northward
in the Cascades. Will go for a compromise that has high chance probability of precipitation
north and coast and likely probability of precipitation north Cascades and leave the
southwest interior dry overnight.

The weakening warm front will move into the interior of western
Washington late Sunday afternoon and will be preceded by light rain
at times. Precipitation will taper off to decreasing showers
overnight as the front moves east and dissipates.
Temperatures...despite the clouds and light precipitation...will
likely be a bit warmer than today with the dissipation of the
inversion that is currently in place.

Another front will move NE across the area on Monday. While this
system will be a bit wetter and windier than sundays system...the
GFS...NAM...and European model (ecmwf) have all trended weaker with the system. Wind
and precipitation with this weak system will most likely be
uneventful.

Post frontal showers Monday night will likely continue Tuesday with
onshore flow and convergence zones as weak impulses moving into the
area from the west. The GFS takes steadier precipitation with a
burst of warm advection into southern Oregon and northern
California. The 12z European model (ecmwf) is an outlier as it brings a 1011 mb low
NE into about Hoquiam then across the Cascades and shows steadier
and heavier precipitation across especially the southern portions of
western Washington then into the Cascades. The GFS is a more
consistent solution for now and was followed.

Temperatures in the short term will average a few degrees above
normal for early February. Albrecht

Long term...model consistency for Wednesday is not that good with
the European model (ecmwf) showing precipitation with a stalled front and all of the
other models showing a more consistent solution of a passing upper
ridge with light low level offshore flow. At this time will opt to
include mostly cloudy conditions with a low chance of rain across
mainly the southern half of western Washington...but Wednesday may
end up being completely dry.

Rain chances will increase late Wednesday night into Thursday as the
first in a series of fronts and short wave frontal waves move NE
across the area around a deep upper low and associated trough along
150w. Individual features will be tough to time and are rather
inconsistent between models and model solutions. But it looks
generally wet and mild with brief breaks between systems and snow
levels in the mountains around 6000 feet. Albrecht

&&

Hydrology...flooding is not expected through Thursday.

A series of systems moving by just to the west of the area combined
with a nearly stalled frontal system around western Washington may
produce locally heavy rain at times starting later Thursday or
Friday and continuing through next weekend. This may increase the
threat of flooding on some area rivers starting Friday or next
weekend. However most models show enough break between systems to
minimize the flooding threat. Snow levels appear that they will
average around 6000 feet in the Cascades Friday through next
weekend. Albrecht

&&

Aviation...an upper ridge over the region will move east on
Sunday...allowing a weakening upper trough and associated cold or
occluded front to move across the area. Northwest flow aloft will become west
tonight. Weak low level offshore flow will become light onshore or
southerly on Sunday.

Meanwhile...ceilings continued to lift and visibilities improve this
afternoon. Anticipate areas of ceilings near 1k feet and visibilities in the
3-5sm /due to fog or -ra br/ through tonight.

Ksea...ceilings are anticipated to lift to near 1k feet later this
afternoon or early this evening. Visibilities will be mainly 5sm or
better. There is a 50 percent chance that conditions will improve
into the VFR category by 0600 UTC.

&&

Marine...
falling surface pressure offshore with higher pressure east of the Cascades
will keep the flow easterly flow tonight. A weak cold or occluded
front will move across the area on Sunday. This front will be
followed by a slightly stronger frontal system on Monday.

&&

Sew watches/warnings/advisories...
Washington...none.
Pz...small craft advisories are in effect for the coastal
waters from Cape Flattery to James Island out to 60 nm and the
West Entrance to the Strait of Juan Delaware fuca.
